“I always knew one of your kids would end up on a milk carton….”
That was a line from the movie “Cheaper by the Dozen” that Shelbie jokingly said as Shyloh recapped part of our nights events that Shelbie missed out on due to helping in the kitchen at church.
Our evening bared a close resemblance to parts of that movie tonight.
We have family visiting from Missouri this week and we invited them to join us for an evening of chili and pie at church tonight as we ended our Vacation Bible School. Anytime we all leave the house its an adventure, but with Jeff, Shyloh, and Bodey going with us in our van and my mom, uncle, aunt, and cousin following in another vehicle, tonight was even a little busier than normal.
We got to church a few minutes late so half our crew hustled in quickly while those of us with babies and toddlers took longer getting out of the van. The kids all headed to the fellowship hall where VBS had been taking place only to realize that tonight they were meeting in the sanctuary. They came back and headed in and we took our seats in the back row. The kids realized that their classes were all sitting together up front so they walked down to join them. About that time I realized I didn’t see Lolly anywhere. Duane was standing in the back so I mouthed to him, “where’s Lolly?'” He scanned the front where her class was sitting and I saw his face pale. He looked at me then headed quickly outside to go look for her. I was holding Shylie who had woke up from nap not quite herself but she had seemed to perk up and still wanted to go ‘”bye bye”. After 2 or 3 minutes I handed her to my mom and headed out to see where Duane was.
I walked into the fellowship hall as he was frantically on the phone with his mom asking her to run over to our house as we had left Lolly at home by herself. Shyloh was on another phone calling home and pleading with the answering machine saying, “Lolly!! Pick up the phone! This is Shyloh.” My heart sank at the thought of her being home alone. How in the world did we leave her at home? I really thought I had seen her in her car seat when we left but couldn’t remember seeing her as we all filed out and walked in. I headed out to the van to look inside…nope not in there. I came back and told Duane to go in and get one of the boys and ask them if she was indeed in the car when we left. He came back out very relieved and said that she was sitting with her class and Shannen had walked her in. Sigh…can I please just throw up now??? I can’t even describe how sick I felt for those few minutes we thought she was missing. Five minutes can really be a looonng time!
Well speaking of throwing up now….Fast forward the evening to eating chili and pie in the fellowship hall. Remember I mentioned that Shylie wasn’t quite herself? She quickly went down hill at church. Her eyes starting glassing over and she felt really warm. Duane and I took turns holding her and then my sweet aunt offered to hold her so I could have my turn to eat. Shylie appeared to have fallen asleep on my aunts shoulder then all of a sudden, yep you guessed it, she threw up…all over my aunt and all over the floor.
Our table looked like a hill of ants scattering. We cleaned up and packed up and left in record time. Us Ney’s don’t do anything in record time let alone break records!
We are now back home in our little safe haven and everyone is accounted for, sick babies cleaned up and everyone safe and sound in bed. I’m very thankful days like this don’t happen often. After a good nights sleep my nerves should be mended tomorrow and hopefully Shylie’s tummy is all better and I’m praying hard no one else gets sick so we can all keep our plans of taking our guests to the ocean. This is when I’m so very thankful for God’s grace! His mercies are new every morning!
(And just for the record…I’ve never left a child at home by themselves…well, at least I didn’t make it out of the driveway…)

ahem....LIAR!
You left ME home. And you did too make it out of the driveway! I had to sit in the kitchen window watching as you drove away without me...
