Shelbie spends most of her free time reading up on Africa or reading biographies on missionaries. She is counting down the days until she gets to go to Liberia and be a missionary!
During one of our last visits to the library she decided to check out some African cookbooks so she could learn more about their culture and what they eat. She decided to prepare an African meal for us.
We had kedjenov served over rice, gebna makleyah, grated carrot salad, and tuo. In American language it is known as terr-cotta stewed chicken served over rice, fried cheese, grated carrot salad, and turned cornmeal.
The meal was...shall we say...interesting.
The chicken wasn't too bad, it was actually a bit more bland than I would have expected, but Shelbie did us and our taste buds a favor and left out the habanero chiles. The chicken had ginger, garlic and tomatoes in it. Again, can we say....interesting. Most of us agreed the carrot salad was ok. It was a mix of carrots and oranges. It was actually a bit refreshing. The tuo...well, I'm really not sure what to say about that. It was, um, cornmeal. So moving on, the gebna makleyah was okay too. I've never had fried cheese before. It almost seemed like it needed something to dip it in though. It is considered an appetizer. Maybe we could "Americanize" it by dipping it in bbq sauce or ranch?
Duane handled the meal remarkably well since he is usually the picky one about his food. I figured he would just make a sandwich or eat some leftovers, but he ate it cheerfully and made lots of jokes about it, although he did tell Shelbie that he wouldn't be visiting her in Liberia when she goes. (I bet he won't complain about meatloaf anymore!) The little girls really didn't enjoy it and left most of it on their plates. I guess they will eat a really good breakfast in the morning! The rest of us ate it and survived, which is a good thing since Shelbie announced that we would be having a once a month African night! We can't really complain when we are so blessed that she cooks for us every night!

Doesn't this make you hungry?...NOT!

oh, I think complaining is perfectly acceptable. I mean...we are looking at the same plate of food, right?
